The Art of Layering

Blogger babes, you know when you travel, you are stocking up on CONTENT! That means switching up your look so you can s-t-r-e-t-c-h out that content!

So here’s my method for Instagram-ready packing: things that can easily mix, match, and layer. This is especially important in winter! You never know what weather you might encounter while travelling, and your temperature might change dramatically between exploring downtown, cozying up in a coffee shop, and hailing an Uber!

Pack a few interchangeable items rather than full outfits for each day! This will save you plenty of room in your bag for vacay shopping. A girl’s gotta hit those local boutiques! This also allows you to switch things up easily between day and night.

To break down my formula for travel outfits, here are the outfit components I packed for my Nashville trip!

Pick the perfect staple items and you don’t even need anything else!

WHITE BODYSUIT

See how completely the outfit changes with just this duster?!

This bodysuit from Naked Wardrobe is such a staple. It goes with everything! You know when you tuck in a long shirt and bunches up around your waistband? No fun! I love a one piece because you never have problems tucking into jeans or skirts, no matter how high-waisted.

BLACK PANTS

Every doll needs at least a few pairs of black pants! They can be casual, chic, or both. Jeans, leggings, leggings—you’ve gotta have some black options! The pair I’m wearing is from J.Crew.

GRAY SWEATER

I love how South Moon Under took your every day soft slouchy sweater and gave it a twist—literally! This piece is casual at a glance, but elevated upon closer look! It’s great for travel because it’s just so comfy.

JEANS

Obvi gotta work in a pair of jeans! I’m a ripped-jeans, high-waisted kind of girl, and I got mine from TopShop!

Swap the duster for a cardigan, switch up the hair, and you’ve got a new look!

A fur coat looks great even when you’re just holding it!

As you can see, all of these items are neutral and match well with each other. And honestly, they are such basic staples that even if you repeated the same white top and denim, you’d still look chic and polished each day! So, on to layering!

PINK DUSTER

I love my pink duster by Naked Wardrobe. It’s not heavy, but gives me a little extra coverage in breeze or a hot sun. Plus, the long length adds some va-va-voom to the simplest outfit!

BLUSH CARDIGAN

I love this cardigan so much, I featured it in my Holiday Trend Guide! I just think the blush pink color is sooo lush. Light neutrals like this always add such a touch of elegance to any outfit, and a cardigan is a great travel piece because they don’t wrinkle as much when you’re catching cabs and sitting on planes!

DENIM JACKET

I mentioned this in my travel uniform blog because it comes with me EVERY time I travel. I love how this one from Zara is perfectly worn in so it’s comfy and casual for getting from one place to another! A great jean jacket is another piece that can be worn every day without getting repetitive!

HEAVY OUTERWEAR

It’s always good to pack a slightly heavier coat, especially when traveling in the winter (also, planes can be SO cold!) I adore my fur bomber from Saks’ Scripted line. I love a faux fur because it ups the glam-factor, even for an every day look.

Make sure you have a range of layers that will work for different settings and different weather! Double points if you can layer outerwear-on-outerwear—I love my fur coat on top of my pink cardigan for extra warmth. So here’s the fun part: accessories!

SCARF or WRAP

My pink Louis Vuitton shawl is another part of my travel uniform. A scarf is great for added coziness and you can use it as a lap blanket in a cold theater or restaurant (under your napkin, of course—don’t get food on your Louis!!)

BELTS

Belts are small enough to pack a few options, and they add so much personality to your ‘fit! I went for a classic J. Crew leopard print on my trip. Leopard can be overwhelming for some, but it’s always fun to have a small pop. And for the record, it’s definitely not overwhelming for me!!

BAGS

I have a few neutral bags that I just love, like this Gucci crossbody! And I never leave town without my YSL purse. Bags are obviously functional and essential to any doll’s outing, but don’t underestimate the wow factor they can add to your look! That’s why I packed my Valentino clutch.

SHOES

Speaking of Valentino, I have like a million pairs of rockstud shoes so I of course needed a pair for Nashville. The other pair I brought is a sweet bow show from Zara. They really tie together all the neutrals I packed!

And there you have it! You really only need a handful of accessories and some strong mix-and-match pieces to create basically a whole vacation-worthy wardrobe.
