At such great heights, The InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown soared beyond my expectations. I should have known, it being the tallest hotel in the west, that expectations are advised to be high from the get-go!
When traveling to L.A. a couple weeks ago, my hopes were to stay at the tried and true Ritz Carlton, but when one of our clients suggested we try a new vestige of luxury in downtown L.A., we listened!
Entering through the porte-cochère, or the valet entrance, I suddenly felt cast into a role in The Hunger Games. Like the Capital, the architecture incorporates odes to landmarks of influence. Stepping out of my car, I noticed a cold grey mural wall etched with outlines of the landmarks of L.A. Stepping in to the hotel, you’re entombed by empty walls in an austere lobby void any activity. Like Katniss’ transition from dungeoned basement to green playing fields, I entered the portal (read: elevator) to be lifted into the heavens (read: the main lobby located on the 70th floor).
Weaving throughout the entire hotel is a retro-futuristic style of design, James Bond meets Hunger Games. The lobby, alone, holds something eye-catching at every turn. From the floor-to-ceiling windows where you can watch airplanes fly in and out from LAX, looking down onto a lot of helicopter landing pads, to the webbed light fixture inspired by the Los Angeles freeways, it’s the epitome of striking design!
The rooms are graciously spacious, with complimentary Nespresso bars (a-must to start off our busy days of photoshoots!) The hotel is conveniently accessible to all of the dining, entertainment and shopping that downtown L.A. has to offer, and it is right across the street from the metro that can take you straight to Hollywood. But with four on-site restaurants that offer a variety of dining options to satisfy every craving (from French cuisine to sushi!), it’s hard to find a reason to leave!
