Why I Dress for Success EVERY Day!

The clothes we wear say SO much about who we are. The Caroline Doll, CEO of POSH PR®, explains why judging a book by its cover isn't necessarily a bad thing...

It’s what’s on the outside that counts.

Nope! I didn’t say it incorrectly. I do judge a book by its cover. I also judge a champagne bottle by its label. I immediately take what’s on the outside into account, because what’s on the outside delivers the message of what’s on the inside. It communicates the promise of the product! (Whether that promise is delivered, is a whole other topic on authenticity, but for now…we’re talking first impressions!)

Somebody once asked me if I bought outfits specifically for conferences. My giant pink furry coat caught her attention. Surely, she thought, I don’t REALLY wear that on the daily! I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. Outside of New York City and California (or any other fashion capital), you don’t typically see the suburban streets decorated with statement fashion pieces. I’ll admit that in Richmond. VA., I very well may be the only one who wears this coat! I LOVE that! I love standing out! Not because I seek attention, but because it means there’s no one else out there like me!

Dressing is a form of personal branding. You know how I always say that my favorite thing about branding is the fact you have the power to shape how your ideal client will think and feel about your brand? That extends to your website, your office space, and how you dress! Clothes are the very first form of communication you have with your client when you meet them. Is what you’re wearing delivering what you promise?

Have you ever heard the saying, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he?” What this says is that what’s on the inside, shows on the outside. How you act is a direct reflection of what’s on the inside!

It’s what’s on the outside that counts. It’s what’s on the inside that counts. They’re directly related! I notice that when I do put in the effort to pull a fun outfit together, I feel more fun! When I wear yoga pants and a t-shirt, that tells my brain that today is a “get-things-done” day! (I.e. sitting in one place for the entire day cranking out e-mails!)

You don’t have to wear designer clothes. You don’t have to wear suits. But you SHOULD dress for success. You SHOULD dress to impress. How? By wearing whatever makes you feel beautiful, by wearing whatever makes you feel empowered. By wearing whatever makes you feel like you, you will attract the ideal client your brand is perfectly suited for!

I can’t WAIT to talk more branding (and fashion!) at “The PR Behind the Pretty” business intensive this January! Sign up here!
